The Lowell Chamber Orchestra combines innovation, tradition, in latest offering https://www.send2press.com/wire/the-lowell-chamber-orchestra-combines-innovation-tradition-in-latest-offering/

LOWELL, Mass., Feb. 11, 2022 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — On Saturday, February 19, the Lowell Chamber Orchestra will become a vessel through which works explore the concept of new and old. “Antique Modernity” is a concert that revolves around Dana Kaufman’s brand new work, written specifically for the Lowell Chamber Orchestra, and works by Francis Poulenc, Georg Philip Telemann, and Jean Philip Rameau, that challenge our concepts of contemporary and traditional.

<img src=”https://www.send2press.com/wire/images/22-0211-s2p-dana-kaufman-800×600.jpg” alt=”Composer Dana Kaufman with Jackson Pollock’s ‘Greyed Rainbow'” width=”800″ height=”600″ class=”alignnone size-full wp-image-78930″ srcset=”https://www.send2press.com/wire/images/22-0211-s2p-dana-kaufman-800×600.jpg 800w, https://www.send2press.com/wire/images/22-0211-s2p-dana-kaufman-800×600-400×300.jpg 400w, https://www.send2press.com/wire/images/22-0211-s2p-dana-kaufman-800×600-200×150.jpg 200w” sizes=”(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px”>
PHOTO CAPTION: Composer Dana Kaufman with Jackson Pollock’s “Greyed Rainbow,” at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Dana Kaufman’s “Greyed Rainbow” was commissioned by the Lowell Chamber Orchestra and written in 2021. When asked about her inspiration for the work, Kaufman says “I considered the concept of ‘Antique Modernity’ in the context of the past two years of the COVID pandemic: what do we now consider ‘antique,’ and what do we now consider ‘modern?’ What is old, and what is new? I thought of a communal melancholy, a sense of optimism, and a continued surrealness in our daily lives.”

An art connoisseur, Kaufman continues: “On a visit in 2021 to the Art Institute of Chicago (in my hometown), I saw what I thought to be a fitting exploration of this ‘old and new’ reflected in Jackson Pollock’s Greyed Rainbow. Jackson Pollock’s Abstract Expressionist work, which bridges traditional and contemporary 20th-century aesthetics in visual art, has always resonated with me. One of the painting’s elements that I find particularly striking is its use of palettes that may initially appear to conflict with one another. Approximately two thirds of the painting is starkly monochromatic, while the bottom third of the painting incorporates hints of several colors. Pollock’s work connects bleakness and solace.”

The program starts with Francis Poulenc’s “Suite Française d’après Claude Gervaise,” a collection of Renaissance tunes. In 1935, Poulenc arranged (with his personal touch) a few dances in Claude Gervaise’s “Livre de Danceries” for an unusual combination of winds, brass and percussion instruments – “unusual” for our times, but probably common during Gervaise’s time.

The concert will continue with a concerto for two instruments seldom seen together: recorder, and transverse flute. Written by Georg Philip Telemann, this is the only concerto to make use of this combination, conceived at a time when the orchestras of the time were growing, and the sweet sound of the recorder was slowly being replaced by the traverso – the Baroque equivalent of the modern flute.

The end of the program is a suite from the opera “Castor et Pollux,” by Jean-Philippe Rameau, which tells the fantastic origins of the constellation Gemini. The music, which at the time was designed to be arranged for whatever instruments were available at a given ensemble, finds a modern design in LCO’s brand new orchestration. The suite will be accompanied with a slideshow that will tell the story of the opera.

The concert is free to attend, as always. Attendees will be able to meet composer Dana Kaufman. For more information, please visit https://lowellchamberorchestra.org/

Again this year, RVA EFF held the Virginia Environmental Film Contest. First prize went to “Headwaters Down,” directed by Justin Black, Will Gemma, and Dietrich Teschner. This film tells the story of five friends who undertake a 13-day, 250-mile canoe adventure from the headwaters of the James River to the fall line in Richmond. Along the way, they explore the environmental and historical aspects of the troubled yet beautiful river as they witness first-hand the many factors impacting its future.

The two second prize winners were “Breathing Life Back Into Richmond,” directed by Jackie Stephens and “Canaries in the Coal Mine,” written, directed and produced by Nick Garnhart. Two youth awards were also given. All five films will be shown virtually the evening of Sunday, February 20. “Headwaters Down” will also be shown at The Byrd Theater on February 27. Some of the other films featured in the festival are highlighted below.

Visit https://rvaeff.org/ for a complete listing and schedule.

It inspires real solutions toward lasting sustainability and a better quality of life for all Earth’s inhabitants. The Virginia Interfaith Power & Light hosts “Mossville, When Great Trees Fall,” telling the story of one man who refuses to give up when his centuries-old black community, contaminated by petrochemical plants, faces the loss of its ancestral home.

The Richmond Public Library & City Office of Sustainability host “The Sacrifice Zone,” following a group of environmental justice fighters determined to break the cycle of poor communities of color serving as dumping grounds for our consumer society. “High Tide in Dorchester” focuses on ground zero for sea level rise along the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay. Narrated by Kate Winslet, “Eating Our Way to Extinction” takes you on a cinematic journey around the world to uncover hard truths about the most pressing issue of our generation – ecological collapse.

A Suspenseful Memoir Inspires Readers to Open Their Minds https://www.send2press.com/wire/a-suspenseful-memoir-inspires-readers-to-open-their-minds/

ASHEVILLE, N.C., Feb. 9, 2022 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) –- “No Time for Fear,” a new e-book by Yvonne Haarsma, is a suspenseful page-turner that reveals how a mother and her two sons escaped an ego-driven husband while on the run across four continents and being pursued by Interpol, Mounted Police and the FBI.

<img src=”https://www.send2press.com/wire/images/22-0209-s2p-notimefear-800×600.jpg” alt=”NO TIME FOR FEAR by Yvonne Haarsma” width=”800″ height=”600″ class=”alignnone size-full wp-image-78828″ srcset=”https://www.send2press.com/wire/images/22-0209-s2p-notimefear-800×600.jpg 800w, https://www.send2press.com/wire/images/22-0209-s2p-notimefear-800×600-400×300.jpg 400w, https://www.send2press.com/wire/images/22-0209-s2p-notimefear-800×600-200×150.jpg 200w” sizes=”(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px”>

This thrilling memoir starts out by setting the stage for what appeared to be a match made in heaven. However, the author quickly realizes that things are not at all what they seemed. Now, she’s got to figure out how to protect herself and her two young sons from a powerful man who is charming, deceitful and filled with a thirst for revenge.

In a marriage that had reached a dead end, she was desperate for solutions. She sought the assistance of a counselor who, unbeknownst to her, showed herself to be a medium to help put things back on track. Soon, Yvonne begins to receive somewhat unbelievable messages, and is not convinced until a person very familiar to her reveals himself – her deceased grandfather, Edward.

Through messages from the other side, Edward shows her how to trade the darkness for the light and works behind the scenes to carefully guide her.

On the run for a year throughout Asia, Europe, North America and South America, Yvonne and her two boys confront extreme challenges and triumphs.

Readers will meet the many people who helped the author and learn how to trust their own inner voices.

One Amazon reviewer wrote, “This book could be a film script; all the elements are there – passion and suspense.”

Another Amazon reviewer states, “Truth is definitely stranger than fiction. A truly intriguing tale, not only of survival and justice, but how our spirit guides are always looking out for us and work with us in ways we cannot always imagine or understand. We need more inspiring and eclectic stories like this.”

Yvonne’s main reason for writing this book is to help others find their strength and to trust what they may not always understand.

In Yvonne’s words: “It was those difficult moments in my life and then the realization that our spiritual self helps to make us stronger. I’ve learned so much from this experience and hope it will inspire others too.”

OLIVOIX Releases Stunning Debut EP ‘GODDESS’ https://www.send2press.com/wire/olivoix-releases-stunning-debut-ep-goddess/

NEW YORK, N.Y., Feb. 4, 2022 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — The menacingly dramatic opening notes of OLIVOIX’s new EP “GODDESS” immediately give away front-woman Monica Olive’s extensive background on stage and screen. She is a charismatic performer, capable of turning a room pin-drop silent with a single line.

<img src=”https://www.send2press.com/wire/images/22-0304-s2p-olivoix-800×600.jpg” alt=”OLIVOIX EP: GODDESS” width=”800″ height=”600″ class=”alignnone size-full wp-image-78725″ srcset=”https://www.send2press.com/wire/images/22-0304-s2p-olivoix-800×600.jpg 800w, https://www.send2press.com/wire/images/22-0304-s2p-olivoix-800×600-400×300.jpg 400w, https://www.send2press.com/wire/images/22-0304-s2p-olivoix-800×600-200×150.jpg 200w” sizes=”(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px”>

Along with an exceptionally accomplished cast of musicians (including longtime Shwizz bassist Frank Coda), she has created a stirring collection of songs that delve deeply into the trauma of modern society, only to emerge with the strength and resilience needed to fight another day.

Written in the wake of years of personal trauma, cumulating in the loss of her sister to cancer, there is a common thread of darkness running through the songs on “GODDESS.”

“Ashes” is bold and confrontational, while the bandmates find solace in each other’s shared experience on “Sisters.” Yet through it all, Olive’s poetic lyricism finds hope in even the bleakest of experiences.

From the chaotic avant-garde pop of “Thru Yr Veins” to the funk-infused self-empowerment of “GODDESS,” each track creates a world in and of itself. By the closing notes of “Warrior Pack, Pt. 1,” the listener will feel like they’ve been on a true emotional journey – one they will be happy to take over and over again.

“GODDESS” is available everywhere now.
